I was listening to the radio this morning and turned it to the Rick & Bubba Show at just the right moment. Siran Stacey was their guest and he was sharing what he has learned from God through the tragedy of losing his wife and all but one of his children in a car accident. As the conversation progressed Rick made a statement that really got to me. He said something to the effect of God has taught me over the past two years (his 3 year old son drown in their pool at home two years ago) that happiness is not my purpose here but holiness is. He continued to say that he is no longer a believer in Christ but a follower!
As the interview continued Siran Stacey commented on forgiveness and how he had to forgive the young man who hit him and his family. He had to forgive himself. Rick and Siran both talked about how they stood at a crossroads having to decide if they were going to allow Satan to defeat them through this tragedy or glorify God with this tragedy. They talked about sin and that death is sure to come because of sin yet eternal life only comes through the death of Jesus Christ!
Honestly, today is a gut check for me. I'm thinking...Am I a believer or am I a follower? Am I striving for happiness or am I striving for holiness?
"Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found." Psalm 119:35 (NLT). "'If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. '" Mark 8:34 (NLT).
